Virtual/Distant Learning extended for Dec.14-18th, 2020

12-11-2020

A message from Banner Schools:

Virtual/Distant Learning extended for Dec.14-18th, 2020

I have analyzed the data for this week and communicated with administrators in education and health care.  Our State and County are in a state of emergency battling this virus and the severe effects it is having on our community members and hospitals.  The data for the past 7 days shows a slight decrease in infections but is still at an average of 3000 per day with death rates going up.  Today, 3,900 new cases and 27 additional deaths have been reported by the OSDH.  Schools in close proximity using distant /virtual learning for the upcoming week still include Darlington, Maple, Yukon, Bethany, and Riverside.  Canadian County remains in the severe RED risk zone with Yukon being a top area in the state for infection.  Several Banner students and/or family members have tested positive for COVID-19 and/or will be in quarantine for this coming week.  Once again, several essential staff members will be absent throughout next week, some are being quarantined due to exposure.  The majority of staff at Banner feel teaching in person during this current crisis is a severe risk to their health and safety.

Based on all data, current state of threats to safety and health, and the input of my staff, I have made the decision to remain in distant/virtual instruction for the week of Dec. 14-18.   Since the situation has not changed to ensure a safer teaching environment, I feel missing these days of in person instruction compared to the risk of spreading the virus is not worth losing a staff member, student, or someone in our families. The Banner Staff will continue to be at the school and provide assistance in any way possible to students and families.

I am pleading with our Banner community no matter what your opinion with the policy on masks and social distancing to cooperate with the school in following our recommendations to have a better chance of in person instruction after Christmas break.   We wish our students and community the best during this Holiday Season.

I will appreciate your cooperation and grace as a Banner Stakeholder

Mr. Prior
