As we open up the new cafeteria for food service, please be aware that there is a learning curve associated with utilizing a new facility. We hope for a smooth transition, but we greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of students, staff and parents as we develop our rhythm for preparing food and serving it in this magnificent environment! Breakfast on Friday, January 3rd, will be open to parents to join us in our new cafeteria. Muffins and coffee will be available for parents. Parents are always welcome to bring lunch and eat with their student in the old cafeteria. Should you plan to eat a school lunch with your student, please help us by contacting the office before 9:00 am and advising us that we will get to prepare an extra meal for a special guest (or two)!
One of the new changes will be allowing students to fully participate in the Offer vs. Serve program. For breakfast, the minimum food components are 1 cup of fruit (a 1/2 cup of fruit and a 4 ounce juice combined meet this requirement), 1 ounce of grains and 1 cup of milk. In this food service program students are only required to choose a minimum of three of the five food components for lunch which are 3/4 cup of vegetables, 1/2 cup fruit, 1 ounce of grains, 1 ounce of meat/meat alternative, and 1 cup of milk. As an example, if a student chooses a salad bar entree and a milk, they have satisfied the meal requirement since the salad bar entree includes 1 cup of romaine lettuce, 1 boiled egg and 1 ounce of whole wheat crackers plus their milk. For breakfast a student may choose a biscuit, a 1/2 cup of fruit and a juice or a whole cup of fruit, and a milk; this also satisfies the requirement. Students are also being given the option of a small side salad in lieu of the vegetable of the day. The salad bar is available with the choice of an entree salad for grades 4-8.
Please look over the menu and help your student make healthy choices when participating in the meal program at Banner School. The serving line will move much faster when students have already decided what they are looking forward to eating for breakfast and/or lunch!
